Lawrence Court Officer Indicted On Rape Charges

BOSTON (AP) — A Lawrence District Court officer has been indicted on charges he sexually assaulted a female prisoner.

The indictments Monday were announced by Suffolk District Attorney Daniel Conley. Conley's office is prosecuting for Essex County, where 46-year-old Jose Martinez worked 15 years.

Martinez faces four counts of rape, six counts of indecent assault and battery and single counts of assault with intent to rape and misleading investigators. Martinez pleaded not guilty to similar charges in district court in March. His lawyer has said the assaults didn't happen. A date for a superior court arraignment hasn't been set.

Prosecutors say Martinez assaulted the woman in a holding cell, an elevator and a courthouse stairwell on three separate days in 2009 and 2014. He is accused of misleading investigators by trying to get a co-worker to destroy his cellphone.
