BECKET, Mass. (AP) — State police say someone walking on the Massachusetts Turnpike in Becket has been struck and killed by a tractor-trailer.

Police responded to the eastbound stretch of the highway in the western Massachusetts community at about 5:30 a.m. Thursday.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The breakdown lane and one travel lane have been shut down during the investigation.

No names were immediately released and police did not disclose what the pedestrian was doing on the highway.
