Mass. Legislature To Celebrate Historic King Speech

BOSTON (AP) — Massachusetts is preparing to celebrate the 50th anniversary of civil rights leader Martin Luther King's address to the state Legislature.

The House and Senate will convene a joint session at 1 p.m. Monday at the Statehouse, where King spoke on April 22, 1965.

House Speaker Robert DeLeo, Senate President Stan Rosenberg and Gov. Charlie Baker will take part, along with the Rev. Michael Haynes, a retired Boston minister and former Massachusetts legislator. Haynes was a friend from King's graduate school days at Boston University in the 1950s.

Members of the 1965 Legislature, the Massachusetts Black and Latino Legislative Caucus, and community leaders also will attend the brief speaking program and exhibit.
