BOSTON (CBS) – Is Boston really a good choice to host the 2024 Olympics?
Dan Shaughnessy of the Boston Globe joined 98.5 The Sports Hub’s Zolak & Bertrand in studio on Wednesday, and one of the topics brought up was the 2024 Boston Olympics. Shaughnessy, unlike the newspaper that employs him, hates the idea.
“One of the worst ideas ever. [It’s] something that could sink the city entirely. I mean Big Dig times ten,” said Shaughnessy.
Shaughnessy noted the negative economic implications that hosting the Olympics would entail, not just during the time of the games.
“It’s not just the three weeks — it’ll strangle us for nine years from now. It’s the five years leading up to it, and the residual debt, the white elephant venues, the velodrome and all this junk,” said Shaughnessy.
The logistics of hosting different events in the greater Boston area remains to be in question. Zolak spoke about the city’s plan to accommodate the plethora of competitions, which includes making landscape changes to the Boston Commons and having events substantial miles apart from each other — certainly not walkable like many advocates argue.
“They want to cut down the big oak trees in the Common and put beach volleyball there. Yeah, not happening,” said Zolak. “Not too many people are going to be walking 15 miles to where the golf would be,” said Zolak.
