BEDFORD (CBS) — Soldiers serving abroad will soon be getting tasty reminders of home, including some Thin Mints and Samoas, thanks to hundreds of local Girl Scouts.
Nearly 700 Girl Scouts and 300 volunteers donated 30,000 packages of cookies as part of Cookies for a Cause at Hanscom Air Force Base on Saturday. Throughout their cookie-selling season, the Girl Scouts sold boxes of cookies that were put aside for donation to military organizations and food pantries.
“They’re learning these wonderful business skills; another important ingredient is that of service,” Girl Scouts of Eastern Mass. CEO Pat Parcellin told WBZ NewsRadio 1030. “It’s a way for our troops to give back to the military troops.”
“It makes me happy that they’re actually getting the cookies,” said 14-year-old Molly from Manchester. “They said when they get the cookies, it’s a really big deal — they have to hide it from other people or else they’ll eat it.”
The girls also met some activity duty military personnel and made cards for military families.
Molly said she wrote “I know this isn’t a lot, but it does mean so much to us, what you do is highly appreciated.”
And the troops said they appreciated the Girl Scouts coming out in the cold with a smile.
“These are going to be our future leaders, these girl scouts,” one major said. “That’s what service is all about.”
