Crash Kills Middleborough High School Senior

MIDDLEBOROUGH (CBS) -- A Middleborough High School senior was killed early Sunday morning in a single-car crash into a telephone pole that injured two others, police said.

Nathan Childs, 18, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash that occurred on Wareham Street by the South Middleborough fire station at about 1:30 a.m., according to police.

Two others in the vehicle were taken to Tobey Hospital in Wareham with non-life threatening injuries, authorities said.

On Monday, Superintendent Roseli Weiss said that the other occupants in the vehicle were juniors at the high school and they were able to walk away from the scene.

WBZ NewsRadio 1030 reports that all three in the vehicle had just performed in their school's musical production of "Grease" earlier in the evening.

Weiss, who saw Childs' performance Saturday night, said that the last date of the play was Sunday but that performance was cancelled.

"Nathan was having a wonderful experience as a member of the 'Grease' cast. He loved his time on stage," she said.

Police believe Childs may have dozed off after getting a bite to eat with friends.

Weiss said that she and the rest of the school community were extremely saddened and devastated by Childs' death.

"It's really difficult when that desk is empty," she said. "When things that were his or projects that he created are there and he's not."

The superintendent also noted that Childs was a member of the concert choir and an artist.

The school was open on Sunday for students to meet with grief counselors.

Police said Childs was driving his 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee north on Wareham Street before the crash.

Students were notified of the death Sunday morning by the school's emergency response system.

"He was definitely somebody that brought joy to the room," a classmate named Hannah told WBZ-TV. "He always had everybody laughing."

The crash is under investigation.
