Family Dog Shot And Killed In Auburn, NH

AUBURN, N.H. (CBS) - Police are investigating who killed a family pet. The Carter family found their one year old Bernese Mountain Dog near their home Thursday with a single gunshot to the head.

"He was a family member. He had a great personality. He was the best dog anyone could ask for," said owner Brandon Carter.

Brandon says his mother let Tydon outside early Wednesday morning, but he never returned.

"He stays in the area and will always come back within the hour," said Brandon.

Twelve hours later, Brandon found Tydon less than 300 yards from their Dollard Road home.

"I was just hoping that he was sleeping when I was walking up toward him and then once I actually got closer and felt him I realized he was frozen solid," said Brandon.

Tydon had been shot once in the head and Animal Control says shell casings were found nearby. Police believe a hunter may be responsible, as deer hunting season began this week.

"I think the shot was intentional. I mean, he was shot directly in the head. How can that be a mistake?" said Brandon.

The Carter family says Tydon was found on their neighbor's property - private property.

"I don't know who could do something like that and leave the dog out there in the woods. It's just kind of a heartless act," said Brandon.

Police say they are investigating.
