Man Charged With Stealing Cub Scouts Donation Box In Malden

MALDEN (CBS) – A man accused of stealing a donation box right out of a volunteer's hand faced a judge in Malden Tuesday afternoon.

Police arrested 28-year-old Kenneth Paul Smith Jr., of Chepachet, R.I., on larceny charges Monday evening.

Marguerite D'Angelo was helping her son sell popcorn at a local Stop and Shop as a fundraiser for the Cub Scouts Sunday afternoon. They had just wrapped up their last sale and counted $236 in donations when police say Smith grabbed the money box and ran off.

A woman who was shopping drove after him and took some cell phone pictures.  Police used those and surveillance photos to track down Smith Monday.

He was arrested, but the cash was not recovered.

However, several people donated money after hearing about the theft.

That brought the Cub Scouts back to the $236 total that was stolen.

In court Tuesday, Smith said he stole the money for drugs.
