Hundreds Attend Funeral For Winchester Teen Killed In Crash

WINCHESTER (CBS) – Hundreds of people, including a large number of classmates, teammates and rival players, came to pay their final respects to the Winchester senior who was killed last week in a car accident.

Pat Gill, who was killed on September 20 when his car struck a tree in Winchester, was a senior co-captain of the Winchester High School football team.

On Friday, Gill was honored at St. Mary's Church in Winchester. The funeral was attended by hundreds of family members and friends, filling the church. A large group of football players remained outside the church in silence, wearing their jerseys, during the service.

The Woburn and Lexington football teams attended the funeral, while members of the Woburn hockey team also were in attendance.

Gill was a standout athlete who played football, lacrosse and hockey.

Students crowded around Gill's casket as it left St. Mary's following the funeral service, with some sobbing as they offered one final chant of "Pat."

Winona DiNetto, a Winchester parent, said the news of Gill's death was stunning to her daughter and many others in town.

"This is really struck these kids deeply, and the parents. Each one of us as a parent says 'this could have been my child,'" said DiNetto.

Woburn football coach Rocky Nelson said his team wanted to be in attendance since many of them have known Gill for many years. Gill played Pop Warner football in Woburn.

"I feel extreme sorrow for the Gill family," said Nelson.

The rival Woburn and Winchester football teams are scheduled to play Saturday at 1:30 p.m. with a tribute to Gill planned.
