BOSTON (CBS) — This question keeps getting brought up by callers into 98.5 The Sports Hub: should the Patriots consider signing Richie Incognito?

With the Patriots offensive line struggling this season, could Incognito possibly be a good move for the Patriots to help them out?

Incognito was suspended last season by the Dolphins for alleged misconduct on former teammate Jonathan Martin. Just last month the NFL cleared Incognito to return, being allowed to full activity and regular season game participation.

For some fans this is a debatable topic due to his reputation, but one thing you couldn’t question about him was his talent and grit. The Patriots could use all the help they can get on the O-line — and that might mean a promotion from within — but on Wednesday afternoon, Albert Breer of the NFL Network discussed the possibility of bringing the troubled player to New England on Gresh & Zolak.

“Brady needs to be protected. Age is a factor right here — how many more hits can he take? Preserving the quarterback has to become priority until those five guys can prove they can do it themselves. What Incognito is, is former linebacker Brian Cox. Cox was a valuable player. He brought attitude, and that’s what Richie brings,” emphasized Breer.

For a player like Incognito, who likely recognizes this is his last chance in the NFL, the situation here with the Patriots could be ideal. He’d have to be on his best behavior. And at the same time, the Patriots would be creating a much needed sense of urgency.

“Is he savvy enough to worry about his job and still help out when he’s not scripted to? I just want to know what’s the mindset,” asked Zo.

Gresh and Zo agree the offense needs some edge, and Breer is in lock step as well with that assessment.

“He brought edge to the Dolphins. Wherever he gets signed, he will bring that edge. He was the voice of the offensive line, they [Dolphins] saw something in him,” said Breer.

That edge that the Patriots need could potentially be Incognito, what do you think?
