Police: Man Tried To Steal $308-Worth Of Shrimp, Threatened Workers With Hypodermic Needle

WORCESTER (CBS) - A 37-year-old Spencer man is facing a number of charges after he allegedly tried to steal $308-worth of shrimp from a Worcester grocery store.

Police say a manager at the Price Chopper on Park Avenue watched John Pinard load up his shopping cart with several bags of shrimp and attempt to leave without paying.

That manager confronted Pinard, who proceeded to allegedly slam his shopping cart into the manager several times.

A struggle erupted as another employee jumped in to help. At one point, Pinard is accused of threatening to stab both men with a hypodermic needle if they didn't let him go.

Police say Pinard took off, but dropped a pill bottle with his name on it.

Police also recovered several hypodermic needles from the scene. The shrimp was also left behind.

Pinard, who had two outstanding arrest warrants for larceny, was tracked down.

Police say the two store employees were able to positively identify him.

He's charged with Assault with a Hypodermic Needle, Armed Robbery, Larceny Over the value of $250 and Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon (shopping carriage).
