Ipswich Police Officer Charged Over Domestic Incident

IPSWICH (CBS) - A three-month investigation has ended in charges against an Ipswich police officer.

Officer Peter Nikas, 52, was arraigned Friday on four counts of assault and battery, malicious destruction of property, and intimidation of a witness.

The charges stem from a domestic incident on October 27, 2013 that began with an alleged physical confrontation involving Nikas and his girlfriend.

Investigators say the altercation later spilled over to a friend's house, where the woman had gone with her children.

Nikas went to the home twice, according to prosecutors. The second time, he allegedly forced his way through the front door, engaging in a physical altercation with a police officer who also lives at the home, before the other officer was able to get Nikas to leave.

Bail was set at $1,000. Nikas was ordered to turn in his service weapon, wear a GPS monitoring bracelet, and remain alcohol-free.

He's due back in court on June 10.
