79-Year-Old Woman Flashes Gun After Man Shovels Driveway & Refuses To Leave

LOWELL (CBS) - A man apparently trying to make a quick buck in Lowell picked the wrong house to go after on Tuesday.

Police say that man, who was not identified, shoveled out an elderly couple's driveway without asking, and proceeded to knock on their door and demand money from them for the service.

The 79-year-old woman who lives at the home told the man to go away and closed the door on him.

After he continued knocking, the woman, who has a license to carry a firearm, returned to the door with a gun in her hand and once again told the man to get off of her property. She later told officers she was worried the man might try to break into the house.

As the shoveler was leaving, he spoke to a neighbor.

"The woman pulled a 38 or a revolver and told him to get the hell out," the neighbor told WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Carl Stevens.

Police were called. Officers spoke to the shoveler and to the homeowner. Officials say they do not consider the incident to be criminal in nature. They noted that the woman did not point the weapon at the man or make any verbal threats. She also has a permit for the weapon, and thus no laws were broken.

WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Carl Stevens briefly spoke to the woman on Wednesday morning while she was shoveling snow off of her car roof. She asked Mr. Stevens to leave her alone, a request to which he obliged.
