Duxbury Considers Canceling February School Vacation

DUXBURY (CBS) - A local school system could decide Wednesday night whether to get rid of February school vacation for at least a couple of years.

The "School Calendar 2013-2014 & 2014-2015" is on the agenda for Duxbury's school committee meeting.

According to a report in the Duxbury Clipper, discussion of that agenda item will be about whether to cancel February vacation for those two school years.

The town is currently building a new middle and high school, which is expected to be ready for the start of the 2014-2015 school year.

Officials who proposed the plan say they want to make sure they have enough time to move everything into the new building.

Some who are skeptical of the plan say getting rid of the vacation could cause childcare issues for staff members with children who live in other towns, and it would also eliminate a week where many students make prospective college visits.
