BOSTON (CBS) – There is a call for action after the I-Team investigated Essex County Sheriff Frank Cousins.

The I-Team exposed questionable campaign fundraising by Cousins, including pressuring employees to donate.

Now, John Walsh, the Chairman of the Democratic Party is weighing in.

Walsh released the following statement Tuesday:

“The allegations that Republican Sheriff Frank Cousins has created an atmosphere of fear and intimidation to pressure his employees to contribute to his campaign committee are serious and disturbing. At a time when many Massachusetts families are still struggling, the notion that an elected law enforcement official would force rank and file employees to fork over their hard-earned dollars to his campaign shocks the conscience.

“While this alleged corruption was unearthed by the media, there must now be a thorough investigation and those who have broken the law must face consequences. The only way to restore the people of Massachusetts’ faith in their elected leaders is to root out corruption wherever it is found, regardless of political party or influence.”

Sheriff Cousins, who is a Republican, calls the allegations “anonymous personal attacks” by disgruntled employees. He claims no one was ever pressured to contribute to his campaign.

Just curious; this is a political party issue? Democrats investigating a Republican? Is that what this is about? Not state officials to investigate officials? I’m all for him to be investigated, but distracted by the above rhetoric. While they are at it, I hope they expand the investigation into the proposed regional dispatch center to be located at the Essex County House of Correction. This is perhaps part of Sheriff Cousins future vision.

You mean to tell me that suddenly this high and mighty Democat, whos party has nothing but clean hands, wants an investigation into the Sheriff, because he is a Republican. Now that is choice. How about calling for an investigation because there may be laws that were broken, plain and simple. Guess if the Sheriff had been a Dem, it would have been ignored. Who cares what political party is in play.

    1. Pat says:

Ginny2 is spot on. This is a lame attempt at a big D democrat to take some heat off the parties impending indictments. I’m so tired of being taken as a fool by these pols. But, yes, an investigation is needed but called for by John Walsh ? Where are our officials like our AG?

I don’t recall much commentary from John Walsh regarding our Lt. Governor and his key fundraiser Mike Mclaughlin. Crickets…….

  6. deadrabbit says:

Cousins realy is a Dem. remember he switched parties so Weld could appoint him Sheriff. Cousins got caught ,it’s just that plain and simple.
