BOSTON (CBS) – Boston Bruins forward Brad Marchand does not like the nickname “Marshmont,” and wants 98.5 The Sports Hub’s Felger & Massarotti to know it.

“Whatever makes them feel cool about themselves, but I’m not fond of the name,” Marchand told CSNNE’s Joe Haggerty on Wednesday.

“It can be seen as disrespectful; they know I don’t like it, but they want to keep calling me that it’s up to them,” the Bruins forward said. “I’m not sitting here disrespecting their name and everything, so whatever makes them feel cool.”

The name become popular when Felger and Mazz caller “Rick from Natick” mispronounced Marchand early last season while the forward was still trying to find his way in the NHL. Felger agreed that “Marshmont” did not belong on the team.

Luckily, both of them were proven wrong. They both admitted it last season.

But that will not stop Felger and Mazz from using the catchy nickname, which has taken on a life of its own after Marchand blossomed into the B’s second-line scoring/agitation threat.

“Who cares what someone called in and called him, the conversation hasn’t come up in the dressing room,” forward Shawn Thornton told Toucher and Rich Thursday morning.

“If it really, really bothers him we’ll probably never call him that, no. There is no way anyone would fire anyone up in that room,” Thornton said with a chuckle.

For those wishing to adhere to Marchand’s wishes, he does have a few other nicknames.

“Squirrel; someone else came up with that one,” said Thornton. “Garden Nome. Most of them are about being short or a type of rat.”

After hearing those, “Marshmont” doesn’t sound all that bad.
