BOSTON (CBS) – Part of the Tobin Bridge was shut down during rush hour Monday morning so police could talk down a suicidal man.

Traffic was backed up for miles.

The 38-year-old man was safely taken off the bridge by State Police just after 7 a.m.

He was first seen on the upper deck just before 6 a.m. standing at the railing at the edge of the bridge.

State troopers were called in, they closed the lanes inbound to Boston and talked with the man for about an hour, before he surrendered.

He was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital for treatment.

whenever I read a story like this, I feel thankful that I have a car and a house and people to talk to. I was stuck in the traffic, and happy about it, knowing progress was being made. Good luck to the man and his family.

This is total b.s. Roads are ment to be driven on not stoped so some idiot who can’t handle his problems has to inconvience all of us with their selfishness. Look we all have problems but don’t include me with them. The cops should have either let him jump and scooped him up at the bottom or let him figure it out on his own and go home. No symapthy from me only anger and hostility.

matt you are a real piece of work. you keep going at this rate and youll drive people that know you to the point of jumping. or better yet they can throw you off the bridge you little maggot. god forbid the great matt be late. believe me the bathrooms and waste paper baskets will still be there when you arrive.

      1. Matt says:

Yeah your right. Maybe I am wrong for thinking that people should keep their own problems to them selves or at a minimum tell them to their freinds and family. Instead when I am having a bad day I should just stop in the middle of the Pike and wait until somone stops by so we can have a talk so I can feel beter about my self. Selfish itiots.

I hope all went as well as possible for this man and for the police who responded to the situation. By the time I got to the Bridge, all seemed to be better traffic-wise. But maybe this was the reason that, for once, the far-right lane normally closed was finally opened. It doesn’t make sense to me, where it’s programmed to take actual or FastLane electronic tolls, that it is shut off most every morning and helps to exponentially slow down the commutes and back up incoming traffic. Typical bureaucratic state agency non-common sense procedure, although I realize this is secondary to the more important issue of the guy talked down–I hope he receives help that will turn his life around for the better.

If all the lost hours could be added up for everyone involved in that traffic delay, the total would be astounding! In lost revenue, I bet it could be a good class action lawsuit. Maybe only to deter this kind of selfinsh behavior. When looking for the answer, to live or die: It’s best not to enrage thousands of people who may not tell you what you want to hear! The suicide prevention helpline would have been a smarter way to get someone to talk to. Duh!

Sorry I am with Matt on this one. My only request for the next jumper is to please try to make the leap around… 11:30ish to not cause such of a back up. If life is that bad ( I am sure you have free health care) GO SEE A DOCTOR! OR…. instead of standing there waiting for some attention just do it. We have enough problems of our own to deal with people who can’t hack life. my life, most would cry at as well.. but I am not going to cause a traffic jam all the way to New Hampshire because I want some attention.

yes… tell the suicidal man to be more realistic and logical.. you people are pieces of work.

I cannot believe you people. This is somebody!!!!!! Not a piece of trash. Big effin deal traffic was backed up tough .. There are people that are sick and dont have the answers like all of you ….He has a family and they love him very much. That doesnt mean his life is easy. I just hope if anyone of ur friends or family need you , they dont call u during rush hour.
