Curious About 9/11 Rescue Dogs

With so much discussion about the health and lives of rescue and recovery workers, I am curious if there are any of the rescue dogs from 9/11 still alive, and if so, how is their health?  - Lisa, Rockland

Right after the 9/11 attacks a search and rescue team out of Beverly, Mass was deployed to ground zero.  Six search and rescue dogs were part of that team from Massachusetts Task Force One.

I asked the Task Force what became of those dogs and learned that only one is still alive.  Her name is Moxie, she's 13 and retired.

The others died over the last 10 years:

  • Oddie - was struck by a car approximately 2003 and died
  • Barkley - died in  2002 of cancer at age 11
  • Elvis- died in 2009 at the age of 11
  • Cinder - died in the spring of 2009 at the age of 11
  • Tara - died spring 2011 at the age of 16

You can see photos of members of Task Force One at ground zero here.

Reporter Kathy Curran did a story this week looking back on that mission with members of the team, including one man who worked with the search and rescue dogs.  You can see it here.
