Two RI Teens Killed In Crash After Visiting `Vampire' Grave

EXETER, R.I. (AP) -- Rhode Island state police say two teenage girls from Warwick have been killed in a one-car crash in Exeter after visiting the grave of a 19th century teen rumored to have been a vampire.

Two other Warwick girls in the car were not hurt. The victims' names are expected to be released Thursday. Police say the victims, ages 16 and 17, were not wearing safety belts.

Capt. Darren Delaney says the survivors told investigators after leaving Chestnut Hill Cemetery on Wednesday at about 9:30 they decided to drive down Purgatory Road because they thought it looked "haunted."

He added the girls were not familiar with the "dark, windy road."

Delaney says the 1892 gravesite of 19-year-old Mercy Brown is a frequent destination for teens.
