The Fresh Grocer: Spring Mix In Summer

BOSTON (CBS) - Even though it's summertime, Fresh Grocer Tony Tantillo says your best bet for salad greens could be the spring mix.

Though you can get spring mix any time of year, the colors are never more vibrant and the lettuce never fresher than during the summer months. Look for both the reds and greens to be bright and free of any yellowing.

These baby lettuces used to be very expensive but now retail between $3.99 and $5.99 a pound.

If not stored properly, lettuce goes bad quickly.  To ensure freshness, rinse salad greens in cold water in cold water as soon as you get home from the grocery store.

Then wrap them in a moist paper towel, place inside a perforated plastic bag, and store in your refrigerator's vegetable bin.

You can watch Tony weekdays at noon on WBZ-TV.
