MASHPEE (CBS) – The U.S. Coast Guard planned to search through the night for a young man off the coast of Cape Cod.

A Good Samaritan called the Coast Guard around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday saying he saw a 17-foot boat driving in circles with no one on board near Popponesset Island.

“We received a report the 21-year-old man had left from a marina in Waquoit Bay to take the boat to Popponesset Island. He left around 8:30 this morning and has not arrived where he was supposed to be taking the boat,” Petty Officer Connie Terrell told WBZ NewsRadio 1030.

Terrell said it takes about one hour to make the trip.

Mashpee fire and police are helping with the search.
