Westwood High A.D. On Leave After Track Coach Firing

WESTWOOD (CBS) - Westwood High School Athletic Director Karl Fogel is now on paid leave while the town investigates the controversial firing of the school's track coach.

Head track and field coach Tom Davis was fired April 29 after a heated argument with Fogel over boys running shirtless at practice.

Afterwards, the school said that the "decision to relieve Mr. Davis of his duties was not the result of a single incident, but rather the regrettable outcome of an ongoing discussion." They did not elaborate on what that ongoing discussion may have been.

On Tuesday, Superintendent of Schools John Antonucci released a statement saying:

"In light of the recent events involving the Westwood High School track coach, I have recommended to the Westwood School Committee that an independent investigation be commenced, under the Committee's direction.

Based on what I know myself about the events, it is clear that, as so often happens, the sound bite does not match up with the whole story. When the facts are gathered, we will share with the community as much as we are legally permitted to."
