It's troubling news about adolescents and alcohol. A new survey shows alcohol use among young adults is up.

Doctor Peter Delaney with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration says the figures are according to combined data compiled between 2006 and 2009 from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health.

And where do these 12 to 14-year-olds get alcohol from?

People who begin drinking alcohol before the age of 15 are said to be six times more likely to develop alcohol problems than those who are age 21 and older. Delaney says parents need to take preventive steps.

Experts say 40% of kids have tried alcohol by the time they reach 8th grade. They say parents have the greatest influence on a child's decision to drink, with children looking to their parents to set rules and expectations about drinking. If you drink, set a good example by drinking in moderation.
