Mike Lowell Talks Retirement, 2011 Red Sox

BOSTON (CBS) -Former Red Sox third baseman and World Series MVP Mike Lowell is enjoying retired life.

"I've been well," Lowell told WBZ-TV's Dan Roche from an autograph signing in Wilmington. "I still call it the offseason because it's normal for me to say that. The months after the season were good. I feel like I wasn't rushed to put in a lot of friend-time, dad-time, husband-time. That was a nice welcome."

Lowell retired last season after a 13-year major league career. A two-time World Series champ, Lowell said he had no regrets walking away from the game he loved.  He had a few offers to return as a DH with incentive laden contracts, but opted for retirement instead.

"It was not difficult for me to say no, that was an easy choice," Lowell said. "I had easy closure, especially with such a nice day and ceremony that I had at Fenway. It was a really fitting way to end my career. I'm happy with that. I can comfortably look back and say I really don't regret any angle or any way I handled myself or was prepared for any game."

Lowell, who won a Gold Glove in 2005 with the Marlins and World Series MVP in 2007 while with the Red Sox, is now trying his hand in coaching. He is coaching a six-and-under team in Miami, which he called "a whole different world."

"They're trying hard. After about 10 minutes they fight in the dirt a lot," Lowell said. "They don't really pay attention to the game. That might be the coaches fault."

Fittingly, he is coaching the Texas Rangers, a team he was nearly traded to in 2010.

As for his former team, Lowell is not concerned about the Red Sox rough start to the 2011 season or the negative press that surrounds it.

"As a player I didn't pay too much attention to it," he said. "I think everyone's put monster expectations on the team. They have very good players, they're going to be fine. It'll be interesting to see how the season plays out."
