Fire Destroys Swampscott Businesses, Apartments

SWAMPSCOTT (CBS) – A huge fire tore through a centuries-old waterfront building in Swampscott overnight.

Firefighters believe the blaze started in the basement of a complex on Humphrey Street around 11 p.m. Tuesday. The flames spread quickly because of the way the building was constructed: with many empty spaces in the walls.

The fire spread to the first floor of the building, where there were six businesses, and then upstairs to eight apartments, where 12 adults and two children were staying.

Alarms went off and everyone escaped safely.

WBZ-TV's Kate Merrill reports

However, the businesses and apartments were destroyed.

One firefighter was treated for minor burns to his hand.

There's no word yet on how the fire started.

WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Carl Stevens reports.
