Storms Burning Hole In Massachusetts Snow Budgets
BOSTON (CBS) - Communities throughout New England were in the red, before the first flakes of this week's double-barrel storm even hit. Cities and towns have literally plowed their way through their entire removal budgets, with half of winter still before us. Here are some sample budgets, as of January 31.
STATE OF MASSACHUSETTS – spent $56 million of $59 million budget.
BURLINGTON- spent $550,000; $200,000 over budget
CAMBRIDGE – spent $1.2 million; $825,000 over budget
GLOUCESTER- spent $900,000; $300,000 over budget. Announced a hiring freeze and any expenditures over $100 have to be approved by the Mayor's office.
HOPKINTON- as of January 19, Hopkinton spent approximately $361,000. Cost of most recent two storms not yet tallied.
LAWRENCE- spent $743,057; about $600,000 over budget
MILFORD- spent $590,000; $90,000 over budget
NEWTON – spent approximately $2.5 million
NORTH ADAMS- spent about $265,000; about $25,000 over budget
SALEM- spent $660,000, but does not include all invoices from the last storm. Estimate they have spent $750,000
SOMERVILLE- estimate $600,000; about $100,000 over budget
SUDBURY- spent $468,851; $54,196 over budget
STURBRIDGE- spent $100,000; about $50,000 over budget
SHREWSBURY- spent $492,557; still totaling most recent storm
TAUNTON- spent $667,227 . The bills for the most recent storm are still being calculated; $167,227 over budget
WALTHAM- estimate $1,021,000 spent through January 19. An additional $400,000-$500,000 spent since then; about $600,000 over budget
WESTON – spent $391,000 prior to January 28
WILMINGTON- spent $438,750; about $100,000 under budget
WORCESTER – spent $3.23 million; about $500,000 over budget
