Aerial spraying for mosquitoes postponed

WBZ-AM

Breezy conditions have prompted the cancellation of the aerial mosquito spraying scheduled to happen Wednesday night in southeastern Massachusetts.

Peter Judge with MEMA says they will re-assess the weather situation Thursday.

The spraying of mosquitoes is meant to counter the risk of Eastern equine encephalitis.

On Tuesday Gov. Deval Patrick said state health officials have found levels of EEE in mosquitoes that are the highest in decades and a major public health risk.

No human cases of EEE have been reported this year.

Spraying of the pesticide will take place in the communities of:

Acushnet, Berkley, Bridgewater, Carver, Duxbury, Dartmouth, East Bridgewater, Easton, Fairhaven, Freetown, Halifax, Hanson, Kingston, Lakeville, Marion, Mattapoisett, Middleboro, New Bedford, Norton, Pembroke, Plympton, Plymouth, Raynham, Rochester, Taunton, Wareham and West Bridgewater.

These areas were chosen based on factors including mosquito sample surveillance findings, environmental observations and weather conditions among others.
