Clean, Fresh And Natural
So just what is the biggest overall beauty trend for Spring 2013? “Natural, fresh looking matte skin using crèmes or powders,” says Hess. “Soft defined eyes using warm tones, natural cheek color as a contour and shiny lips in nude tones.” While fashion designers on the spring runways played with different hair styles and bright splashes of color, the one thing they all shared was this fresh-faced look. From Ralph Lauren to Marc Jacobs, the designers walked girls down the catwalk with what seemed to be barely-there makeup.
Don’t Forget Your Fingers
When planning your spring beauty palate, it’s easy to forget how important nails are to an overall look. It is more and more expected that a complete fashion look will include carefully manicured nails. Hess recommends any pastel colors for your nails to instantly update your look. If you’re looking for nail art, Katrina Hess suggests going for any kind of geometric design.
Another look shared by almost all the designers at New York Fashion Week was a strong bold eyebrow that differed wildly from the carefully plucked and trimmed brows most of us are used to sporting. It was met with mixed reactions from fashionistas. While some were ready to embrace the look, many felt that it would be a runway-only trend that the average women would have a hard time pulling off. What does Hess think? “I believe that most women can wear a fuller brow,” she said. “But the brows have to be professional shaped for a tailored bold look. Wearing lighter brow color, one shade lighter then hair color, will create a softer look for brunettes and red heads. Blondes stay with a color that’s ashy.”
Kiss And Tell
While face and eyes may be minimally made up for spring, many designers made lips a focal point. Brightly colored matte lips appeared on the Burberry, Giles and Missoni runways. But the look is not quite as simple to pull off as it might seem at first glance. Luckily if you want to add bright coral or fuchsia lips to your look, Hess has some advice. “Exfoliate, Exfoliate, Exfoliate,” she says. “Lips need to be smooth and hydrated. I suggest using Sara Happ lip scrub and Lip Slip. The scrub will make the lips smooth, and the Lip Slip hydrates and keeps lipstick in place. This will create a bouncy, full look.”

Pick Just One
Luckily with spring’s minimal look it’s affordable and easy. Instead of spending a ton of money on cosmetics, you may be able to get away with just purchasing one or two new products to play with. When asked what was the easiest way to bring spring into your makeup palate Hess had this advice: “Add a new lipstick color and blush. Natural tones are complimentary on all skin tones. This season brings a fresh soft ‘no makeup’ makeup look. Soft pink and nude corals work for most women. Not too nude or it will look washed out.”
