Much of Australia's culture can be traced to its history as a destination for many working class Scottish and Irish immigrants. The immigrants brought recipes from home for classic meat pies. Over the years, these recipes have evolved and have become something unique. Specifically, Australian meat pies often contain or are topped with tomato sauce.
