Car Crashes Into Chanel Store On Newbury Street In Boston In 'Smash And Grab'

BOSTON (CBS) – A car crashed into a Chanel store on Newbury Street early Friday morning in what authorities said was a "smash and grab."

A Boston Police spokesperson told WBZ-TV they got a call for breaking and entering at the high end store just before 4:30 a.m. When officers arrived they found an empty Nissan Altima inside the heavily damaged front door.

Police spoke with a witness who said they saw a man running to a white SUV that was waiting nearby with a woman in the driver's seat. A second car, a Jeep SUV, may also have been involved, according to investigators. There have been no arrests.

Police said about 20 hand bags were taken but they're still doing inventory to determine if anything else was stolen.

"It's the city, right? It's a major designer store. So I'm not surprised to see that somebody tried to break in," Clare Fitzgerald of Dorchester told WBZ-TV outside the shop.

"It's concerning, but I think it's indicative of a much larger problem that has been going on for a really long time around here," Morgan Middlebrook of Brighton told WBZ.

The Nissan Altima was towed away shortly after 6 a.m.
