FALL RIVER (CBS) – Judi St. Hilaire, the wife of Fall River Mayor Paul Coogan, is in intensive care after she was hit by a car Sunday morning while on a bike ride.

Coogan said St. Hilaire was on a group ride in Mattapoisset when a car ran a stop sign, hitting her and two others.

St. Hilaire broke several ribs, her collarbone, and punctured both lungs.

She was taken to the ICU at Saint Luke's Hospital in New Bedford. Coogan said Monday that St. Hilaire is in stable condition and doctors are continuing to run tests on her.

"She will have a long journey to recovery, but we have no doubt that she will be back on the road before long," Coogan said.

Coogan said the crash was "an important reminder of what matters most." He also thanked the community for its support.

"I wanted to take a moment to thank everyone for the hundreds of comments and messages showing support for Judi and I after her accident," Coogan said. "While I can't take the time to reply to each and every one, know that we have seen all your kind words. It is humbling to see the outpouring of support for Judi."
