20-Year-Old Woman Arrested In Connection Attleboro Stabbing Arraigned

ATTLEBORO (CBS) -- A 20-year-old Weymouth woman was arrested Sunday in connection with the death of a 28-year-old woman in Attleboro. Kayla Cantu was arraigned in Attleboro District Court Monday afternoon on one charge of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

Kimberly Duphily died Friday after she was stabbed twice at a Leroy Street apartment, according to the Bristol County District Attorney Office.

Duphily, her 28-year-old husband, Cantu, and others had been hanging out at the apartment prior to the stabbing. Around 4 p.m. a fight, allegedly over stolen money and drugs, broke out in the apartment. Duphily and Cantu allegedly attacked one another inside and outside the apartment, the D.A.'s statement said.

"At that point, the defendant is accused of swinging a knife at [Duphily's husband] and slashing his face, which is the basis for the charge lodged against her."

Cantu allegedly then ran off and found a police officer working a detail on Bicknell Street. She told the officer she had been stabbed, and while she did have a knife wound, it was likely from the knife slipping in her hand, the D.A. said.

At the same time, Duphily's husband and others were trying to render aid to Duphily, who was bleeding heavily. She was rushed to Sturdy Memorial Hosptial where she was pronounced dead.

Duphily's husband and Cantua were treated for minor injuries.

According to the D.A., Cantu has lived most of her life in Attleboro. She was arrested in Providence but waived rendition in Rhode Island.

While Cantu ordered to be held on $25,000 cash bail, she was also ordered held without bail for up to 60 days after a bail revocation was allowed by the court. She was previously out of bail for an assault and battery charge.
