DANVERS (AP) — A Massachusetts police chief is recovering at home from injuries he received in an off-duty motorcycle crash over the holiday weekend, officials said.

Danvers police Chief Patrick Ambrose was on his motorcycle in Newbury on Saturday afternoon when a man driving a Honda CRV took a left turn in front of Ambrose, Newbury police told The Salem News.

Police said Ambrose, 57, of Danvers, suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries.

The other driver, a 71-year-old man, was cited for failing to yield the right of way.

Danvers Town Manager Steve Bartha said Ambrose was off duty at the time. Capt. James Lovell has been named acting chief while Ambrose recovers.

Ambrose has been chief for about 4 1/2 years after joining the department full time in 1987.
