Whitey Bulger's Girlfriend Catherine Greig Free After Completing Sentence

BOSTON (CBS) -- Her name is on the mailbox where Catherine Greig has been living quietly for months now in South Boston with her twin sister Margaret McCusker, serving out her federal prison sentence.

"It's wonderful, couldn't be better, never should have happened," McCusker told WBZ-TV.

Because the longtime girlfriend of Boston mob boss Whitey Bulger has finished her sentence for helping him evade capture for 16 years.

"When she woke up this morning she was happy, happy, went for a walk, two walks," McCusker said.

Walking the neighborhood is her routine. But after serving an eight-year sentence, and another 21 months for refusing to testify before a grand jury, McCusker said it hasn't been an easy return.

"It's easy now but it was difficult in the beginning. She's not accustomed to it, she's not accustomed to being home, being out and being free," she said.

McCusker said federal agents came to her home this morning to remove Greig's electronic monitoring bracelet. It's a day she says Greig is embracing as a free person.

"She said today is when it ends. They came and took the bracelet off, it was marvelous," McCusker said.

Greig was faithful to a man convicted in the murders of 11 people while running a crime ring in the 70's and 80's. The notorious pair was finally arrested in Santa Monica, California in 2011 and Greig plead guilty to helping Bulger a year later.

He was murdered in a West Virginia prison, a homicide investigation that is still open. McCusker says her sister was loyal out of love.

"She loved him and he loved her. There's no reason to blame her for anything. She should never have gone to prison she's a gentle, kind, loving person," she said.

Greig is now trying to live an unassuming life.
