Hatchet-Wielding Man Shot By Police In Downtown Brockton
BROCKTON (CBS) – A hatchet-wielding man was shot by police officers in downtown Brockton Wednesday afternoon.
Brockton Mayor Moises Rodrigues says the man with the hatchet was in a phone store yelling and acting aggressively. Employees of the store flagged down police officers who were part of a funeral escort.
"The officers stopped and ordered the individual to drop the hatchet. He refused and came at the officers," Rodrigues said. "One of the officers shot once and the individual continued. The second officer used his taser."
It took a third officer shooting a second time to finally subdue the suspect. It happened on Main Street just before 12:30 p.m.
A large number of police officers remained in the area, which was marked off by crime scene tape. One officer could be seen standing near a hatchet in the crosswalk.
State Police will handle the investigation. Brockton's mayor says two of the three officers involved are veterans of the department.
"Listen I can't say enough about the men and women of our police department," Rodrigues said. "They represent us well, and they represent their department proudly. I know the officers who were involved in the shooting personally, and they're good individuals who do a lot for our community."
The man was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital and later to a Boston hospital where he remains for treatment.
