UPDATE: David Ortiz Recovering After Being Shot In Ambush At Dominican Republic Bar

The former Red Sox slugger was shot and wounded at a bar in Santo Domingo, his father told ESPN’s Enrique Rojas.

CNN reports that Ortiz was shot in the back. He is reportedly in stable condition.

Early Monday morning, Ortiz’s father said that no organs were damaged and a full recovery is expected.

The Red Sox released a statement, saying that “David is being treated at Clinica Abel Gonzalez in Santo Domingo where he is recovering after surgery.”

“We have offered David’s family all available resources to aid in his recovery and will continue to keep them in our hearts,” the team said.

Ortiz, 43, retired from baseball in 2016. In 2004, Ortiz helped break an 86-year championship drought in Boston and went on to help the team win championships again in 2007 and 2013.
