16-Year-Old Girl Injured After Lawrence Shooting

LAWRENCE (CBS) -- A teenage girl who was shot in Lawrence is expected to survive her injuries, according to the Essex County District Attorney's Office. Police responded to High Street for a shooting around 9 p.m. Friday.

The 16-year-old girl was initially driven to Lawrence General Hospital then she was transported to a Boston hospital.

"Based on information obtained from witnesses, it was determined that there was a large group fighting in the street," explained Police Chief Roy Vasque in a written statement. "The victim was a passenger in a Black BMW which drove to the High St address with several individuals that were involved in the fight."

One person from the BMW stepped out of the car and shot several rounds into the air.

As the car was leaving, someone from a home on High Street shot into the car, hitting the teen, police said.

Lawrence Police and the D.A.'s office are investigating the shooting. "It remains very active at this time, and a speedy resolution is expected," said Vasque.

The driver of the BMW, 20-year-old Christian Figueroa was arrested at the hospital for an active warrant in connection with an unrelated shooting. He faces several firearm charges.
