'No-Contest' For Boston College-Boise State: ServPro First Responder Bowl Cancelled Due To Lightning
BOSTON (CBS) -- The ServPro First Responder Bowl was supposed to pit the Boston College Eagles against the 23rd-ranked Boise State Broncos in Dallas.
The Eagles were hoping to get their eighth win of the season. The Broncos were hoping to end their season on a high note after losing the Mountain West Championship game.
In the end, neither team got what they wanted. Instead, it was Mother Nature who came out victorious at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, as the game was officially cancelled due to lightning in the area. It will be considered a "no-contest" for the two teams.
This is believed to be the first bowl game cancelled because of weather.
At least the bowl game's official Twitter account had some fun as complaints began to mount on social media.
But the cancellation is unfortunate for Boston College and all the Eagles fans who made the trek to Texas. BC jumped out to an early 7-0 lead on a nice 19-yard touchdown run by A.J. Dillon on their first drive of the game, and they held that advantage until the 5:08 mark in the first quarter, when lightning was first spotted in the area.
That prompted an 80-minute weather delay, and with more storms expected in the Dallas area throughout the afternoon, officials cancelled the game.
With that disappointing conclusion, the Eagles finish their season at 7-5, missing out on their first 8-win campaign under head coach Steve Addazio. Boston College remains 14-12 all-time in their bowl history.
And that Dillon touchdown? That is out of the record books as well, so he finishes his sophomore season with 10 touchdowns and 1,108 rushing yards.
