Brookline Police Charge Man With Brutal Attack On Woman

BROOKLINE (CBS) – Police have arrested a man suspected of forcibly attacking and sexually assaulting a woman early Saturday morning in Brookline.

Mainor Edgardo Suazo Martinez, 20, of Allston is charged with kidnapping, assault with intent to rape and larceny. Police said there's also a warrant for his arrest in a separate case out of Boston.

The Brookline attack happened on Thorndike Street around 2:30 a.m., police said.

The victim left a friend's place on Commonwealth Avenue and was heading home when a man approached her, police said.

"A gentleman approached her, unknown to her, and started making small talk," said Brookline Police Lt. Philip Harrington. "The gentleman grabbed keys and a cell phone from her and started walking away. The victim continued walking and a short distance later was grabbed and pulled into an alley. The subject sexually assaulted and actually choked the victim."

The woman escaped and a short time later, police located and arrested the suspect.

People living in the neighborhood said they're stunned to learn of the brutal attack.

"It's disturbing actually, to see that on this street, especially, because I do live like right over there," said Crispin Ferris.

"Thats horrible. I'm disturbed. I'm unhappy. I feel badly for the woman but I just hope that we can do something about it, maybe change attitudes possibly," said Helen Mary Hotz.

Martinez is scheduled to be arraigned on Tuesday.
