Multiple Vehicles Stolen Overnight In Walpole

WALPOLE (CBS) – Police are investigating a string of stolen vehicles and car break-ins overnight in Walpole.

Four cars were taken from the area of East and School Street. All of the cars were recovered by Thursday afternoon. No suspects have been identified.

Walpole Police Chief John Carmichael said investigators believe the thefts may have been a coordinated effort.

"This amount of vehicles that were broken into would indicate that there is more than one person," he said.

At least 11 cars were broken into. The vehicles were unlocked, and stolen items included money and credit cards.

"Unfortunately, the vehicles were unsecure, and the keys were inside of the motor vehicle, so that makes it very opportunistic for someone who wants to commit a crime," the police chief said.

The police chief warned residents to take out their keys and lock their vehicles and homes to be safe.

"Safeguard your property, even though you live in safe communities and safe properties, you have to take those precautions," he said.

A number of people also reported their cars had been entered in the overnight hours. Police have canvassed the neighborhood, are reviewing possible surveillance video, and are talking to residents to find out if anyone saw the thefts.

"Every vehicle that's been broken into, we've gone down and detectives have processed it for evidentiary value, and we will continue to do that probably throughout the day," Carmichael said.

Police asked anyone with information to call detectives at 508-668-1212.
