Falmouth Police Shooting: 2 People Accused Of Interfering With Police

FALMOUTH (CBS) --Two people charged in connection with the shooting of two police officers in Falmouth were arraigned Monday. Police say Marcus Maseda, 18, and Kimberly M. Koval, 38 tried to interfere with the officers' efforts to follow shooting suspect Malik Koval.

They were both charged with intimidating a witness, assault and battery on a police officer, and interfering with the duties of a police officer. Their bail was set at $7,500.

Koval, 21, is accused of opening fire on two officers who were responding to a call for a neighborhood disturbance Friday night.

In court, a defense attorney detailed that Maseda has no criminal record and Kimberly's only run-in with the law was in 1996, but that case was dismissed. "This is not an individual that is involved in criminal activity, not an individual that certainly raised a child to engage in any sort of criminal activity," the attorney said of Kimberly.

He described that Kimberly had been coming home from work as Koval was outside arguing with a neighbor. She avoided the situation with police until she heard gunshots. Koval was fleeing and she tackled him and held him there until police caught up, said the attorney. She also pushed a weapon away from all parties.

The Assistant District Attorney instead said the pair had attacked and jumped on a police officer in order to prevent the officer from getting to Koval. She asked their bail be set at $25,000.

Officers Donald DeMiranda and Ryan Moore were both injured. DeMiranda was shot in the chest, though his ballistic vest stopped the bullet. A second bullet hit him in the shoulder area. He remains hospitalized in good condition. Moore was grazed in the neck by a bullet. He was treated and released from Falmouth Hospital.

Koval, who was shot by police, was taken to Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston and is recovering there. He will be arraigned in his hospital bed Tuesday morning.

Earlier this month, Weymouth Police Officer Michael Chesna was shot and killed while investigating a car crash. In April, about 10 miles away from the Falmouth incident, Yarmouth Sgt. Sean Gannon was shot and killed in the line of duty.

Maseda and Kimberly Koval are scheduled to appear in court again on August 22.
