2 Police Officers Shot In Falmouth, Suspect Identified

FALMOUTH (CBS) - Two police officers and a suspect have been shot on Cape Cod. The Falmouth Police officers suffered non-life threatening injuries after they were shot responding to a call about someone breaking bottles on Ashley Drive Friday evening.

Sources say one officer was shot three times, twice in the vest. District Attorney Michael O'Keefe says the officer was awake and talking with his family in a hospital hours after the shooting.

Another officer was grazed in the head and was treated and released from the hospital.

Sources say the suspect, 21-year-old Malik Koval, is known to police. He was shot multiple times and was flown by medical helicopter to a Boston hospital. He is expected to survive.

O'Keefe says the officers were responding to a disturbance and confronted the man who was reportedly breaking bottles in the middle of the street. Witnesses say they saw the suspect outside of a car yelling at a woman inside. He allegedly became agitated when officers arrived, pulled out a gun and started shooting.

Koval's family says he grew up in Falmouth. "Really, truly he has been a loving and caring kid and this particular situation is something that none of us really saw coming," said Emmalyn Anderson.

WBZ-TV Security Analyst Ed Davis says it is not uncommon for officers to respond to multiple disturbance calls in one night. "This is a low level type of call, not something that you would arrive at and unholster your weapon for," Ed Davis said. "It just goes to show these lethal attacks against police officers can happen everywhere."

Earlier this month, Weymouth Police Officer Michael Chesna was shot and killed while investigating a car crash. In April, about 10 miles away from the Falmouth incident, Yarmouth Sgt. Sean Gannon was shot and killed in the line of duty.

In a statement, Gov. Charlie Baker called the shooting senseless. "The Baker-Polito Administration believes the brave men and women who risk their lives every day to protect and serve our communities deserve our deepest respect."
