Dog Dies After Being Left In Hot Truck At Jamaica Pond
BOSTON (CBS) – A dog has died after it was found inside a hot truck near Jamaica Pond.
The male pit bull was found on Burroughs Street in a Chevrolet pickup truck at about 3:00 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.
Boston Police and Inspectional Services responded and attempted to revive the dog, but it was too late.
The dog was taken to the MSPCA-Angell Animal Medical Center.
"Unfortunately by the time the dog arrived within a minute his heart stopped beating," said Boston Animal Care and Control Director Amanda Kennedy. "His temperature on arrival was 109.7 which is as high as the thermometer will go so it could have been higher than that."
Kennedy says he was probably in the car for at least two and half hours.
According to the MSPCA, the inside of a car can heat up to 100 degrees in 10 minutes on an 80 degree day – even with the windows slightly open.
"In hot weather and you get the high humidity you really have to take the dog with you. You cannot even for five minutes, your dog can get into real trouble," said Lt. Alan Borgal of the Animal Rescue League of Boston. "It's actually a felony in Massachusetts."
Last year, Gov. Charlie Baker signed a bill that protects pets left in hot cars--as well as those who break them out in order to rescue them.
Investigators are considering criminal charges against the dog's owner.
