Chicopee Police Officer, Woman Injured In Collision

CHICOPEE (CBS/AP) — Officials say both a Massachusetts police officer and female driver were hospitalized after their cars collided.

The crash happened around 4 p.m. at the intersection of James Street and Memorial Drive as the officer was responding to a medical call.

Chicopee Police said two witnesses confirmed the officer had his lights and siren on at the time. They said the woman didn’t see him, and pulled in front of him–and that he tried to stop, but struck both her car and a light signal.

Officer Michael Wilks says emergency crews freed the 83-year-old woman after she was trapped in her car. Wilks says both the officer and the woman were conscious as they were transported to the hospital.

The officer was treated and released with minor injuries, and the woman is still hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

Wilks said the officer was cited for failing to stop fully at a red light, and will undergo remedial training on responding to emergency calls.
