Boston's Newbury Street Going Car-Free 3 Times This Summer

BOSTON (CBS) -- Newbury Street will be closed to vehicles three Sundays this summer.

The street will be open only to pedestrians on one Sunday during each month from July to September.

This follows a successful test of the "Open Newbury Street" initiative last August, during which Newbury was closed from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. from Berkeley Street to Massachusetts Avenue.

Pedestrians were able to enjoy the street without worrying about traffic, while bands played and people relaxed in lawn chairs.

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh's office said the activities and concept will be similar to last year's event.

His office said they are currently conducting outreach and will release further information once they've picked dates.
