STONEHAM (CBS/AP) — Authorities say a 16-year-old Massachusetts girl was killed in a crash in Stoneham.

State police responded to Pond Street around 12:45 a.m. Sunday on a report that a sport-utility vehicle had rolled over in a single-vehicle crash.

The driver was found dead at the scene. Police identified her as 16-year-old Sydney Coiro from Stoneham.

"It's just a sad situation."

Tearful hugs and grief in Stoneham, overcome with emotion, they struggle to come to terms with the sudden passing of a good friend, lost at such a young age.

Just before 1 a.m. Sunday, police found a 2000 Ford Explorer rolled over not far from the Stone Zoo. Police say Coiro was behind the wheel.

By late afternoon Sunday, word was spreading quickly.

"She was a great friend, always like showing me like how much what a true meaning of a friend would be and I thought I may as well as well just come down and pay my respects after I heard," friend Andrew O'Neil said.

They scattered flower petals that were cast by the wind, in memory of one of their own. Eddy Moreira spoke with Sydney by phone Saturday night. Now she's gone.

"It's just a part of life. Only the good die young like everyone says and you just gotta kind of live on with her memory and deal with the fact she's gone but at least she's in a better place now," Moreira said.

State police are investigating the cause of the crash.
