Winds Bring Downed Trees, Power Outages

NORWELL (CBS) -- High winds were downing branches and even trees, as well as causing power outages, Tuesday morning--including in Norwell, where a tree fell on a house.

The tree fell through the ceiling of a home on Grove Street just before 7 a.m.

The homeowner told WBZ-TV that the tree fell while he and his family were still asleep, and that it woke them up with a sound like thunder. Even his neighbors heard it."Considering how big the tree is, I think the house held up well," said Sean Callaghan, who lives across the street.

In Cohasset, Tom Murphy was woken up by the wind just in time to hear a massive ash tree crash into his workshop. "I was lying in bed, and heard it. And my wife said 'Was that a branch?' And I said, 'No, a bit more than a branch,'" Murphy said.

A tree also fell in the middle of Shoot Flying Hill Road in Barnstable.

Winds were approaching 50mph across the South Shore during the early morning hours. WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Ben Parker reported that power outages were widely scattered across Massachusetts.
