Police Shoot Barricaded Man In Falmouth

FALMOUTH (CBS) – Police shot a barricaded man who made suicidal threats before pointing a gun at officers in Falmouth, officials said Saturday morning.

The man was shot in the hip area and is being treated for non-life threatening injuries at a Boston hospital. No police officers were hurt in the incident at a residence on the Teaticket Highway.

In a statement, the Falmouth Police Department said they received a 911 call just after 8 p.m. Friday night for an intoxicated male barricaded in his bedroom, holding a pistol to his head and threatening suicide.

Officers responded to the residence and talked to the man via cell phone. He refused to surrender and kept making suicidal threats, police said.

After attempts to negotiate failed, a special response team entered the residence. Authorities say officers tried to use "less lethal measures" to gain the man's cooperation, but he pointed the gun at police and was then shot.

The man, whose name has not yet been released, faces charges including assault by means of a dangerous weapon, unlawful possession of a firearm, and firearm violation with one prior violent crime.

The Cape and Islands district attorney is investigating the officer-involved shooting.
