Quincy Girl Leads Effort To Write Letters To Santa After Skydiving Injury

QUINCY (CBS) - Local children are writing letters to a skydiving Santa who was injured in a stunt over the weekend. But these aren't Christmas wishes they are wishes for his recovery.

For years Santa has been bringing holiday cheer in Quincy and now that he's hurt, one little girl hopes to convince other kids to return the favor.

Abigail Coughlin is concerned for Santa.

"We feel bad, my daughter was horrified," said Andrea Coughlin, Abigail's mother.

It's something the sixth grader has never felt before. She's been going to see him fly in since she was a baby.

But this year, the skydiving Santa Claus made a hard landing at Pageant Field while parachuting with elves during his annual holiday kickoff celebration.

"The poor guy, he's been so nice to us jumping out of the plane every year," Andrea said. "It's just he had a bad fall and we feel bad."

So Abigail started a get well soon card drive for Santa, along with a collage.

"We went through the Christmas cards and pulled out all the Santas and thought to cheer Santa up," Andrea said.

They are hoping their efforts will catch on.

"One of the teachers said they will have students work on cards this week so hopefully we'll get some more," Andrea said.

It's a holiday tradition Abigail hopes Santa will continue for years to come.

"Please get well soon," Abigail wrote in her letter. "All the boys and girls are sending you best wishes and Christmas miracles on the way for your speedy recovery. Your friend, Abigail B. Coughlin."

If you want to write a get well card to Santa, you can drop it off at Quincy's Parks and Recreation office. No stamp is needed.
