Police Arrest Suspect In Newton Gas Station Armed Robbery

NEWTON (CBS) -- Police arrested a Newton man in connection with an armed robbery at a gas station in the center of town.

Police arrested Matthew A. Skinner, 33, for allegedly robbing a Gulf Gas Station armed with a rifle on Nov. 15. According to the Middlesex District Attorney's office, a Newton District Court judge ordered Skinner held on $5,000 cash bail after a Friday arraignment.

A surveillance video shows a masked man entering the Gulf station on Beacon Street at around 9 p.m. on Nov. 15 carrying a long gun. He can be heard asking the clerk to "open the register now, please."

Skinner turned himself in to Newton Police after a warrant was issued for his arrest, according to the DA's office.

Skinner was charged with one count of armed masked robbery. Should he post bail, Judge Mary Beth Heffernan ordered Skinner to stay away from the gas station, have no contact with the clerk on duty the night of the robbery and submit to random drug or alcohol screenings. He is due back in court on Jan. 23.
